Meet Chinua

Chinua Rhodes is a proud product of the Sacramento City Unified School District, having attended its schools from 1st-12th grade.

Raised in South Sacramento, Chinua comes from a family dedicated to service.

His grandfather was the first Black person to hold an executive office in California as Director of Parks and Recreation, and his father helped incorporate the City of East Palo Alto. This legacy of service guides Chinua’s actions, rooted in Community, Character, Consistency, and Culture.

Chinua understands the challenges faced by the local public school system and, as a father of five children ranging from 8 to 15 years old, he has a personal stake in the success of these schools.

As a school board member, Chinua has initiated significant programs to promote inclusivity and cultural respect. He championed the community schools model, integrating academics, health and social services, and community engagement to improve student learning and community well-being. He played a key role in renaming three schools to honor cultural diversity: Miwok Middle School, Suy Elementary, and Umoja International Academy.

Chinua also recognizes the importance of breaking down governmental silos to address quality-of-life issues. He collaborated with the City of Sacramento to bring more investment and access to school communities through joint-use programs and activations. Additionally, he expanded the urban agriculture program, securing $400,000 to enhance its services in South Sacramento schools.

Chinua prioritizes equity in school facilities by ensuring budget allocations address the needs of under-resourced, historically marginalized neighborhoods. This focus helps close significant equity and opportunity gaps, benefiting South Sacramento and the entire district.

Beyond his policy work, Chinua actively participates in community events, promoting positive role models and leadership opportunities for youth. His service on the school board underscores his commitment to creating supportive learning environments and advancing educational equity for the Sacramento community.
